A code selects an offer; it does not change one
Promo codes route an account to a particular promotion. The multiple, the base and the weighting all belong to the promotion rather than to the code, so a code cannot make an offer cheaper to clear — it can only point at a different offer.
Which is why a page listing codes without listing terms is telling you nothing you can act on. The useful question is which promotion the code opens and what that promotion costs.

Where codes genuinely matter
In three cases. When a promotion is not shown by default and only opens with a code. When an affiliate arrangement attaches a better version of the standard offer to a particular code. And when a site runs several parallel welcome offers and the code decides which one an account is placed on — which is the case worth knowing about, because the parallel offers frequently differ in multiple rather than in size.
In every one of those cases the thing to compare is still the promotion behind the code. A code that opens a 300% offer at 45× is worse than no code at all on a site whose standard offer is 100% at 35×.
Codes that cannot be applied later
Most of them. A promotion is attached to a deposit at the moment the deposit is made, and support will usually decline to move an account onto a different offer afterwards — not out of unhelpfulness, but because the bonus has already been credited against the wrong terms. If a code is going to be used, it has to be used first.
Before entering one
- Find the promotion the code applies to, by name.
- Read its multiple and its base.
- Check whether entering the code at deposit is required — on many sites a code applied afterwards cannot be honoured.
- Price it per $100 before depositing, not after.
