Casino welcome bonus

The industry's own name for the signup bonus, and the one under which the multi-deposit packages hide — where four offers get added up and only the total is advertised.

Turnover is the wagering multiple applied to whatever the terms say it applies to, expressed per $100 deposited so that offers of different sizes compare directly. Where a percentage or a multiple is not published, no figure is computed and the row says so.

Welcome bonus, welcome package, welcome offer

A casino welcome bonus is one offer on one deposit: a percentage is added, and the combined balance is locked behind a stated amount of betting. A welcome package is several of those offers spread across the first three or four deposits, added together, and advertised as a single total. That total is not available on the first deposit and never was — it is the sum of obligations you would take on by depositing four times.

The distinction is the whole reason this page exists separately from the signup bonus page. A signup bonus and a welcome bonus are two names for one clause. A welcome package is a different shape of product wearing the same name, and reading it as though it were one offer is the most expensive ordinary mistake in this subject.

Pages of printed bonus terms spread out beside a laptop keyboard
A package is priced leg by leg, and every leg has its own multiple. The figures are in the terms before an account exists.

So pricing a welcome offer means pricing what is on the table today. In this register 25 of 43 offers carry enough published detail to be priced at all, and the results run from $4,000 to $23,600 of turnover for the same $100 deposit. That is a spread of nearly six to one on a product every listing describes with the word generous.

Welcome offers compared, side by side

This is the comparison the rest of the subject does not print. Same deposit, same arithmetic, four columns that all come from the published terms and one that is worked out from them. Read the last column first and the first column last.

The packages: when the headline is a sum

7 offers in this register are explicitly spread across several deposits. For each one, the number on the banner is the total of every leg added together, so it describes an amount that can only be reached by depositing again, and again, and usually once more after that.

The last column divides the advertised ceiling by the number of deposits. That is an illustration, not a published term: most packages weight the legs unevenly, and several change the multiple between them. The published figures are the four columns before it.

Two things follow from that table. The first is that a five-hundred-per-cent package across three deposits is not a five-hundred-per-cent offer; it is three smaller offers, and only one of them is in front of you today. The second is that the multiple is frequently not constant: one offer here raises it across the legs, another lowers it, and a third varies it between ten and thirty. A single figure quoted for a package is therefore an average of terms that do not apply evenly.

Reading a package honestly

  1. Find the percentage and ceiling for the first deposit alone. That is what is actually on offer today, and it is usually a fraction of the number on the banner.
  2. Find the multiple for that leg. Packages vary it between deposits more often than not.
  3. Price that leg per $100 — headline times multiple, doubled if the terms apply the multiple to deposit and bonus together. The turnover table does this in one glance.
  4. Decide on that leg as though the rest did not exist, because at the moment of the first deposit, it does not.
  5. Only then ask whether the later legs are worth returning for. They are a separate decision made with information you do not have yet.

The same welcome bonus at three different bases

Two welcome offers can both say forty times and be two different products. The multiple applies to something, and the terms name it in one short phrase: the bonus alone, the deposit alone, or the deposit and the bonus together. The third is exactly twice the first, and it is the one most often found in the fine print rather than in the banner.

A $100 deposit at 40× wagering. Same offer, same multiple, three bases — and the rightmost column is the one a reader is least likely to have read.

In this register 23 offers apply the multiple to the bonus alone and 11 apply it to the deposit and bonus together. Those 11 are quietly twice as expensive as their stated multiple suggests, and not one of them says so in the banner. What the multiple applies to covers the clause in full.

The free spins inside a welcome package

27 of the offers here include free spins, and the spins are almost always attached to the package rather than to the first deposit. They are advertised as an addition to the bonus, which is accurate, and priced as though they were free, which is not: on most terms the spins themselves carry no requirement but their winnings do, frequently at the same multiple as the bonus and occasionally at a different one.

  • The spins are not the product. A hundred spins at ten cents is ten dollars of play. It is a sample, not a balance, and it is worth a fraction of what the banner implies.
  • The winnings usually are. Whatever the spins produce lands as bonus funds with a multiple attached, so the second requirement appears only after the spins have been used.
  • The multiple can differ. Several offers here state one figure for the bonus and another for spin winnings. Two requirements, two figures, one advertisement.
  • They are often tied to one game. Which removes game weighting as a variable and replaces it with a game you did not choose.

A welcome offer against the offers that follow it

The welcome bonus is the loudest offer a casino makes and rarely the cheapest. Reload offers — the recurring, smaller bonuses that follow it — tend to carry lower percentages and lower multiples, which is the better combination on both halves of the calculation. A fifty-per-cent reload at twenty-five times the bonus costs $1,250 of turnover per hundred deposited; a three-hundred-per-cent welcome at forty times costs $12,000. The reload is a tenth of the obligation for a third of the headline.

Cashback is different again: a percentage of losses returned, frequently with no wagering attached at all. Where that is the case it is worth more than a bonus several times its size, and it never appears in a list of best welcome bonuses because it has no headline percentage to lead with. Reload bonuses and cashback are covered on their own pages.

Ranges rather than single figures, because these are patterns across the register rather than the terms of one offer. The exact figures for each offer are in the tables above.

The lowest multiples in the register

The multiple is the half of the calculation a reader can act on. Across this register it runs from 1× to 66×, with a median of 40×. Everything below the median is worth a second look regardless of what the percentage beside it says.

What to check before the first deposit

  1. Find the multiple and what it applies toTwo lines of the terms. Everything else in this list adjusts the figure they produce, and nothing else changes it as much.
  2. Find the game weighting tableSlots usually count in full and live tables at ten per cent or zero. At ten per cent the requirement is ten times larger than the figure you just worked out.
  3. Find the maximum bet while the bonus is liveUsually five dollars or euros. It is enforced automatically and breaching it voids the bonus along with whatever it won.
  4. Find the window and divideTurnover divided by days is the staking rate the offer expects of you. This is usually the moment the decision becomes obvious.
  5. Find the cap on winningsA ceiling on what can be withdrawn from the bonus. It does not reduce the obligation; it only limits the return on meeting it.
  6. Decide the deposit before the offer, not afterIf the turnover is more than you would have staked anyway, the honest answer is to decline the bonus rather than to plan to outlast it.

All six clauses are written out on the maths page, one page each, in the order they cost money. When to decline the bonus is the same list read the other way round.

If a welcome offer is not in the register above, this table prices it in about five seconds: find the headline down the left, read across to the multiple, and double the result if the base is the combined one.
